Tracking Code Troubleshooting Guide
Tracking codes are becoming an increasingly useful tool to analyze website traffic, conversions and more. Unfortunately, they can tend to be a bit troublesome when it comes to initializing tracking.
If your code has been added to the website, but it has not been verified and/or it is not tracking. Here are some potential explanations that you should check:
- A quota of website visits may need to be reached.
- The code may need to be installed for at least 24 hours.
- The whole tracking code was not entered.
- The tracking code was improperly placed.
First, check with the developer of the code, or the service provider you are using who supplied the code to you. Each code is different, so they'll be able to tell you any specific requirements that you need to check.
Still Not Working?
Select the Method of Code Insertion
Your code was installed one of two ways. Choose the option you've used for troubleshooting assistance.
1. Template Insertion
The code is placed into the template, generally between the <head> tags. This is a billable service that would have been performed by our team, as template files are not made available to the end user.
What to do: Contact the developer or service provider to look into the issue. If necessary, they will have you pass along information to us to help fix it.
2. Module Insertion
The code is placed into a module and set in a specific module position to mimic that of the template. This is free and can be done by the website administrator (click here for instructions). Some codes will work with this method while others will require the first method.
What to do: Confirm the following:
- The module’s light bulb is turned on.
- The code was copied in its entirety.
- The code was copied correctly.
- The most up-to-date version of the code is inserted. (If they had given you multiple codes while trying to initialize.)
- The module’s position is set to “header” if available, otherwise “footer” or "banner".
- The visibility tab is set accordingly (if only certain pages need tracking).
- If applicable, all tracking requirements have been met (i.e. number of site visits).
If you're still having trouble, please contact us. However, it is likely that we will need to insert the code via method 1.
